Sen. DeMint proposes new healthcare plan

Senator Jim DeMint is sponsor of the Healthcare Freedom Plan.

“People who have insurance and like it need to be able to keep it, we don’t need to tax it, we don’t need it to cost more. What we need to do is let people keep the plans that they’ve got if they like it. If they don’t get insurance at work, we need to give them fair tax treatment because if you get insurance at work, you get about a $5,000 tax benefit a year,” says DeMint.

DeMint says individuals that do not get their insurance through their employer, they need the same benefits, and that’s what his plan is all about.

“If you don’t get your health care at work, or don’t want it at work, you get $5,000 a year to buy health insurance for your family. You can take that money, you can buy a high deductible policy, put the rest in a savings account, or however you want to do it,” says DeMint.

DeMint says his plan is more efficient than the Obama Administration’s plan.

“They really are not interested in getting health insurance in the hands of every American. They want government to control health care. So, a plan like this that is so obvious says ‘hey, we can make a part of health care that works, work even better by being fair to all of those not getting insurance at work.’ So, I’ve introduced this plan, I’m gonna end it as an admendment to anything they bring to the floor. At least people will have a chance to vote if they want a freedom solution or if they want a government take-over,” says DeMint.

DeMint says he hopes the vote leans toward freedom, because he says his Healthcare Freedom Plan puts health insurance back in the hands of the person, not the government.

Month long operation has hundreds arrested

Nearly 800 fugitives and over 1,000 warrants were cleared in South Carolina in the month of June as U.S. Marshalls teamed with local law enforcement across the state in a crackdown known as Operation FALCON. FALCON is an acronym meaning Federal And Local Cops Organized Nationally. The operation has been in effect since 2005 and proved to be an extremely successful tool in getting dangerous individuals off the street.

Key arrests were made across the state including Reginald Foster in Charleston who was wanted for assault and battery with intent to kill and armed robbery. In Greenville, Fritz Miller was apprehended as a fugitive wanted for criminal sexual conduct and in Columbia, Candy Mae Vanpelt had eluded police since 1993 on a charge of intent to distribute crystal meth. U.S. Marshall Amanda Lyons was pleased with the outcome.

“Statewide, we arrested 769 fugitives which included included 36 sex offenders, 20 failure to register fugitives, and we cleared 1,393 warrants statewide,” said Lyons.

In South Carolina, 56 federal and local officers teamed up for Operation FALCON.

SC revenue continues to decline

General fund revenues for the state of South Carolina continue to decline, according to Comptroller Richard Eckstrom.

Revenues for June 2009 were 10 percent lower than revenues for June 2008, at $71.7 million.
Individual income tax revenue in June was down 10.1 percent ($36.8 million) compared to corresponding revenues for the previous June.

Sales tax revenue last month decreased 6.7 percent ($13.8 million) compared to June 2008 sales taxes.

Eckstrom says it’s tough to absorb giant revenue reductions as those seen in recent months without laying off employees. He says he knows the economy will turn around eventually. “But there doesn’t appear to be any sign that the turn is any time soon. For the last 12 months, we saw the general fund drop almost a billion dollars. That’s very, very significant.” [Read more...]
