Seat belt usage at record high

Four out of five motorists in South Carolina now wear their safety belts, more than ever before. The University of South Carolina conducted the study.

Office of Highway Safety Public Affairs Manager Beverly Harris says this is the first time the rate has climed higher than the 80 percent mark.   It’s now 81.5 percent.

Officials attribute the progress to the Highway Patrol working together with local law enforcement to enforce the safety belt law, and also to greater public education efforts. [Read more...]

Sotomayor’s hearing begins, Sen. Graham has concerns

The confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice nominee Sonia Sotomayor began Monday. Senate Judiciary Committee Republican, Senator Lindsey Graham says he wants some answers.

“To make sure the judge understands the difference between interpreting the law and making the law, and that she will not be an activist wearing a robe, and to probe in to some of the speeches she’s made in judicial rulings, particularly in the War on Terror and the Second Amendment,” says Graham.

Graham said Monday at the hearing, if he would have said some of the statements that Sotomayor has said in the past, he would no longer be in office. Graham referred to a comment Sotomayor made in a 2001 speech, in which she said a “wise Latina” would be a better judge than a white male.

“That just bothers me that when somebody wearing a robe, takes the robe off and says that their experience makes them better than someone else. I think your experience can add a lot to the court, but I don’t think it makes you better than someone else,” says Graham.

Graham says Sotomayor will be confirmed unless she has a “complete meltdown,” which he does not think will happen. He says he was not ready to announce his decision on how he will vote. Other Republican critics say they are disturbed by President Obama’s call for ‘empathy’ when looking in to Sotomayor’s background.

If confirmed, Sotomayor would be the first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice.

Sullivans Island responds to string of rescues, tragedies

Three more people were rescued off a Charleston beach over the weekend. Around six in the evening on Sunday, three teenagers were stranded on a sand bar off of Sullivans Island. Sullivans Island Fire and Rescue Department Captain John Weston says the ocean is always dangerous and he urges swimmers to use extra precaution in certain areas.

“It can be more dangerous usually around sand bars and there’s holes and drop-offs, and those are constant, they’re very dynamic, they’re changing all the time. And, last week the wind was a little bit rough and the currents were probablly a little bit stronger than normal, and that all probably contributed to having so many calls,” says Weston.

Sunday’s rescue near Station 17 followed a string of rescues last week in the same area off Sullivans Island. A woman was reported missing after swimming with her friend on Wednesday, and a seperate dead body was washed up on shore on Thursday. Then, three people were rescued on Friday after nearly drowning. Weston says incidents like these should make people more aware, so he offers some tips. [Read more...]
