Federal investigation begins in deadly gas leak

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is now in control of the case of the ammonia leak that killed a woman in Lexington County Wednesday morning. South Carolina officials say 38-year-old Jacqueline Patrice Ginyard of Wagener died after she drove through a toxic cloud released from Tanner Industries. Witnesses say the woman’s car stalled and she fell after getting out to run away.

Officials held a press briefing in Columbia last night. Assistant Investigator Bob Trainor says the gas was released from a hole in a line being used to transfer the liquid from a truck to a tank. He says ammonia gas is deadly because it’s a highly alkaline chemical which can immediately damage the inside of the lungs.

“It’s similar to acidic action on the lungs except it’s an alkaline material.  It does tremendous damage to the respiratory track including the lungs,” says Trainor.  [Read more...]

Graham supports Clyburn nomination for FCC

The Senate next week will vote whether to confirm Democrat Mignon Clyburn and Republican Meredith Attwell Baker to the Federal Communications Commission. Observers say they expect both women to be confirmed.

During a Senate hearing  last week, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina introduced and pledged his support for Mignon Clyburn’s nomination. Clyburn was nominated by President Obama. The South Carolina resident is the daughter of U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, the third most powerful person in the House.

Mignon Clyburn served on the South Carolina Public Service Commission.

In introducing her, Graham said that most importantly, Clyburn is trustworthy.  “One thing I can tell you about Ms. Clyburn, is that a number of us have known her over the years and we trust her.  She will put the best interest of the nation ahead of her own.  And this is a big moment for her family.  Of course, her dad is a big political leader in the state and nation.”

Graham said that the Public Service Commission experience will serve her well in her new position on the federal level.  “The Public Service Commission is a very big deal.  It regulates powerful industries.  She has been Chairman of that commission. The issues she will face at the FCC will not be unknown to her and her leadership will help this country.”

Graham said he’s sure that Senator Jim Demint shares his views.  “Home state senators are expected to speak for members of their state.  But this is not expected of me in this case.  It is my pleasure to be here.  And I want everyone to understand that this is the right person at the right time for the job.”

Sotomayor questioning continues, Graham concerned about firefighter ruling

Today has been the fourth day of U.S. Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Sonia Sotomayor.Frank Ricci, the white firefighter from Connecticut who recently won his reverse discrimination case at the Supreme Court level, said today that an unfavorable ruling by Sotomayor and other Appeals Court judges in New York divides people along racial lines.

Senate Judiciary Committee member Lindsey Graham says he’s really concerned over her decision in the firefighter case.  “As a judge you’ve been basically in the mainstream.  You’ve missed one of the biggest issues in the country or you took a pass.  I don’t know  what it is.”  [Read more...]

Alleged child killer’s arraignment moved

The court arraignment has been canceled today for the man who allegedly killed an 8-year-old girl last week.  The Spartanburg County magistrate’s office says Ricky Blackwell’s arraignment has been canceled for today. Blackwell was released from the Spartanburg Regional Medical Center Wednesday after recovering from a gunshot wound to the stomach which authorities say was self-inflicted.

The Spartanburg County solicitor’s office requested to do the arraignment and bond hearing in circuit court. No date has been scheduled.

Blackwell was charged with first-degree murder after authorities say he went to a home last week and shot Heather Brooke Center four times in the head and neck in connection with a domestic dispute. Center was the daughter of the boyfriend of his estranged wife, Angela Blackwell. Solicitor Trey Gowdy says they will seek the death penalty against Blackwell, who was taken into the Spartanburg County Jail yesterday wearing a bullet proof vest.

Stimulus helping highways, but much work left to do

A total of $463 million in federal stimulus funds is slated for South Carolina for highway projects.

While there is debate over whether stimulus money is helping the states, South Carolina state highway engineers say these federal funds are helping to bring the state’s highway systems up to date.

Tony Shepard, state traffic operations engineer with SCDOT, says one of those improvements involves weather stations, cameras, video devices, and the communication backbone for highways.

Shepard says, “If it wasn’t for stimulus funds, this particular project would not be going forward. It was one that we have had prepared for some time, as we see the need for it but there was just not the money to expand the infrastructure.” [Read more...]
