Activists discourage signing broadband lease

Some public activists says that state lawmakers could be almost “giving away” South Carolina’s broadband spectrum.A subcommittee held a hearing at the statehouse Wednesday concerning the leasing of that spectrum, meaning the different electronic frequencies that broadband suppliers can use.

The FCC controls licenses to transmit using electronic communications signals, whether it’s broadband, television or radio. When the FCC mandated the switch to digital broadcasting, it allowed South Carolina to own, or lease to private companies, the nation’s only public, statewide wireless Internet system.

Search continues for new lottery director

The South Carolina Education Lottery is in no rush to find a new executive director. The chairman of the Lottery Commission has an idea of the person he wants to fill the job. Tim Madden says the ideal candidate “will bring a variety of skills to the table.” Madden says “It’s not necessary that the person who fills this job have lottery experience”,  but he would like to hire someone who “has experience in managing a sales and marketing organization”.

Madden says he would prefer to hire someone “who is a South Carolinian or either has significant ties, or has spent a lot of time here”. Paula Harper Bethea became interim director after Ernie Passailaigue resigned last month to run the Arkansas Lottery system.

Upstate airport considering new flight

The Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport is considering adding a new flight. The airport has launched an online survey that asks passengers if they want non-stop service to Miami. Roslyn Weston, a spokesperson for GSP, says that getting input from potential customers is important. “It is one of the tools that we’re using to help us as we build a case for perhaps going to an airline to offer them the opportunity to provide nonstop service from GSP to Miami.”

The Miami route could connect people to south Florida along with destinations in the Carribbean and South America.
