Sen: Thomas: His investigation not politically motivated

State Senator Glenn of Charleston has sent a letter to Greenville Senator David Thomas, whose budget subcomittee is investigating Governor Mark Sanford’s trips, asking him to proceed cautiously. McConnel says any investipation could interfere with any possible impeachment process, which would begin in the House and could conclude with a trial in the Senate.

Governor Sanford has said that the plane trip investigation is just politics. Thomas responds.   “I’m just fufilling my responsibility as chairman of the subcommittee.  The Governor can throw mud if he wants to.  I’m just trying to come up with accurate information.  And the information will end up with House members, who will make whatever decision they want.”

State Attorney General Hery McMaster asked the state Ethics Commission to investigate Sanford’s trips. So is more than one of those investigations unnessesary? Thomas says they cover different areas. [Read more...]

For school, get used to H1N1 being the top subject

An H1N1 vaccine is not scheduled to be available until October of this year. South Carolina’s health specialists say, with the start of school, parents, teachers and students will have to be diligent about stopping the spread of this flu virus. The state Department of Health and environmental controls Jim Beasley says they have been preparing: “We know the virus still exists in South Carolina. Oddly enough, it’s been behaving unlike most influenza viruses. Typically flu viruses die in the summer. This one didn’t. So we figure that as children start to congregate once again in small classrooms for lengthy times each day, there’s obviously the potential for additional spread and we’re going to continue to be on the lookout for that.” [Read more...]

Green business says energy legislation will create jobs

South Carolina green businesses are urging Congress to pass pending federal energy legislation, which they say impacts on employment opportunities in the state.In June, the US House passed the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009, also known as “Cap and Trade” legislation. A coalition of SouthCarolina green businesses say that there is much potential for new clean energy jobs under the legislation.

Steve Moore, Director of Climate and Energy of the SC Wildlife Federation is part of an alliance of conservation organizations. He says “We’re now waiting for the Senate to act. And the environment and public works committee is the lead committee with jurisdiction over the bill. They’re set to release their version of the bill–their draft version of the bill–on September 8 when they get back off of recess. But there also about five committees in the Senate that will also weigh in on the bill before the bill reaches the full Senate.” [Read more...]

Update: Tropical Storm Bill

SCRN meteorologist Bill Walsh says Tropical Storm Bill could become a full hurricane over the next 24 to 48 hours.  Winds are now 90 mph.  Most of the computer models tracking the storm map it spinning off well away from the Southeast coast, into open water. 

Meanwhile,   Walsh says that Claudette is a big rain making that will affect Florida, Alabama and Mississippi.

Body of missing author recovered from Pee Dee

The body of 56-year-old South Carolina author Dale Hudson was found in the Pee Dee River Saturday evening at around 8:30. According to the incident report provided by Marion County Sheriff’s investigators, two fishermen found Hudson’s body in the Pee Dee two miles south of the U.S. Highway 76 bridge. Hudson had been reported missing Friday. Officers from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources assisted Marion County authorities in recovering the body. Marion County coroner Jerry Richardson said foul play has been ruled out in Hudson’s death.

Horry County police authorities says Hudson last spoke to his wife Wednesday morning. She said Hudson was leaving for a business trip, but called her to say he was getting a migraine headache and was going to rest. She didn’t hear from him again. Among Hudson’s books are “Dance of Death” and “Kiss and Kill.”
