SC Powerball winner yet to claim nearly $260M

A single-ticket winner has won $259.9 million dollars with a Powerball lottery ticket, but that person, or persons, has not yet come forward. Paula Harper Bethea with the South Carolina Education Lottery explains what happens to lottery tickets that go unclaimed: “If no one does come forward, then that money will be split on a pro-rated basis between the states that have Powerball in their states, and the percentage of sales that they have for the Powerball jackpot. So, South Carolina would get some money, obviously, if no one came forward.”

Bethea says they are hopeful the person or persons will come forward to claim the ticket.

“This person or persons who are holding the ticket actually have 180 days to come forward, and so it’s not typical that someone shows up the very next day. Typically there is a period of time between when the winning number is picked and when they come forward,” says Bethea.

The nearly $260 million ticket was sold at the Murphy USA store in Columbia. If the ticket is claimed, the store gets $50,000, only if the ticket shows up.

Instant ticket-checkers are currently being deployed in South Carolina.

Jenny Sanford’s friends: She’s giving it her best shot

First lady Jenny Sanford spoke about her husband, Governor Mark Sanford’s affair for the first time last week. Two of her closest friends, Marjory Wentworth and Virginia Lane were on CBS’s “The Early Show” Monday morning and spoke about the first lady’s current condition. Lane is a godmother for one of the Sanford boys and says Sanford is holding on.

“She’s doing as well as expected. She’s just always had this amazing ability to focus when she’s got all of these trials going on around her and focus on what’s right, what’s wrong, and how to get to protecting her boys,” says Lane.

Lane says Jenny Sanford is standing tall, and has become a role-model around the country. After Sanford found out about the affair, she told Wentworth and Lane. Lane says they were shocked.

“It was heartbreaking, Mark’s the last person on the planet that we thought this would happen. (reporter: were those her words too?) Absolutely,” says Lane. [Read more...]

South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster is poised to go public to reveal the not so surprising move that he intends to run for Governor of South Carolina. McMaster is taking to the airwaves Monday night August 24 on statewide television and on the internet at 6pm to lay out his plans to run for the Republican gubernatorial nomination in 2010. McMaster is also expected to make a formal announcement Tuesday about his plans for the state’s economic future. Three weeks ago, McMaster filed a campaign disclosure form with the State Ethics Commission stating his intentions to run for governor. McMaster has raised a modest $650 for his gubernatorial campaign, however he is expected to move more than $1.1 million in his attorney general re-election fund to his gubernatorial campaign fund.
