Admonishing Wilson: How SC House members voted

The U.S. House members passed a resolution publicly disapproving of Congressman Joe Wilson’s behavior during the joint session of Congress on September 9th.  Wilson, who called President Obama a liar last week during the President’s speech, was admonished on a mostly party line 240 -179 vote.

South Carolina congressmen voting in favor of admonishing Wilson were Rep. James Clyburn, Democrat from Columbia; Rep. Bob Inglis, Republican from Travelers Rest; and Representative John Spratt, Democrat from York. Those congressmen voting against admonishing Wilson were Rep. Wilson moving illegal immigration into spotlight

After being the topic of debate in Congress Tuesday, Congressman Joe Wilson is trying to move the illegal immigration issue into the spotlight instead. He’s taking part in the Federation for American Immigration Reform, FAIR, convention in Washington D.C. The former immigration attorney is lobbying for tougher immigration law enforcement. The annual event is called Hold Their Feet to the Fire.

Illegal immigration issues in health care caused Congressman Joe Wilson to blurt out “you lie” at the president’s health care address in the first place. President Obama said his health care package did not include illegal immigrants. Wilson said that’s not true. SCRN affiliate WTMA is at the convention, and spoke with Wilson about his outburst.

“I serve on the Education Labor Committee, so I was offering amendments, and then I was monitoring amendments on the Ways and Means Committee. And I knew when the Republicans offered the amendments for the Citizenship for Americans Verification, the Democrats defeated them in the other two committees. So, when the president indicated illegal aliens were not covered, I knew that was not true,” says Wilson. [Read more...]

Silver Hair Legislature underway; Baurer talks about Medicare and “fat young people”

The South Carolina House Chambers are filled once again with men and women discussing important issues. But this time, they’re not state lawmakers.

The Eleventh Annual Session of South Carolina’s Silver Haired Legislature has begun this week at the Statehouse. Every year, senior citizens get together to work on recommendations which they will present to the actual legislators in a few months.

The Silver Haired Legislature is divided into six committees which prioritize five issues.

Lt. Governor André Bauer, who is in charge of the state’s Office on Aging, delivered a keynote address Tuesday, discussing how $500 billion will be diverted from Medicare to finance health care reform. Medicare serves 660,000 South Carolinians and purchases $4.3 billion in health care annually. [Read more...]

New Chester County facility to test home construction

A state of the art home construction testing facility will soon be part of the South Carolina landscape. The Institute for Business and Home Safety is breaking ground Wednesday September 16 on its new research center to be located in Chester County. The facility will be located on a 90 acre parcel of land along South Carolina Highway 99. The IBHS evaluated many sites but chose the location in Chester County because it fulfilled key search criteria, including a location more than 100 miles from the coast with a very mild climate to accommodate year-round testing and to preserve the “inventory” of structures to be kept on the 90 acre campus.
