Councils finalize land deal for Shaw AFB

Sumter’s City and County Councils have signed an agreement which is designed to preserve 920 acres next to Shaw Air Force Base. The $6 million dollar land purchase next to Shaw is to prevent future development near the base.

City Councilman Walter “Sonny” Newman says this is good news for the Sumter community because Shaw is a big player in contributing to the economy of Sumter.

Newman said the tax payers made this possible. “We put it on the penny sales tax referendum, and the public voted for it –and so now we’ve approved the memorandum of understanding between the city and the county. We hope to be closing within in the next few days. We feel like we will have taken a giant stride towards preserving Shaw AFB for our community.”

The final agreement came at this week’s City Council meeting following the presentation of an amended version dealing with what happens if the land is ever sold.

Homeland Security suspended Sanford’s clearance for one week

The US Department of Homeland Security suspended South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford’s security clearance following his confession about his affair with an Argentine woman. According to the original document, it was a question of Sanford’s trustworthiness, judgment, reliability and his ability to protect classified information.

The Charleston Post and Courier obtained the documents, the first one dating back to July 1st.

But the federal agency reinstated his access to classified information only a week later, saying that it had been an error by a lower-level employee and was changed a soon as a senior official learned about it. However documents also suggest that high-level supervisors were involved in the decision, since the chief of the agency’s personnel security division advised South Carolina’s Homeland Security director of Sanford’s suspension. Graham, McCain, Lieberman team up re: Afghan war

Sen. Lindsey Graham

U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham Wednesday teamed up with colleagues Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT)in defense of sending more troops to Afghanistan. On the Senate floor, Graham said, “Would you agree that the longer we leave people in that environment, where the momentum is on the enemy’s side, we are doing a great disservice to the 68,000 people who are there? And if you are going to send troops, send them while it matters, send them in enough number to save lives and get the job over sooner rather than later? That is what I think all three of us are saying.”

Graham asserts that there is a power vacuum in the region:”That vacuum has two components to it: the lack of governance and not enough troops to prevent the Taliban from coming back in some areas of Afghanistan.” Read transcript of Graham’s comments
