Mother/daughter found dead in Lake Greenwood

A mother and daughter, who were reported missing Sunday in Greenwood, were found dead in a car in Lake Greenwood Tuesday morning. The Laurens County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Natural Resources says 40 year old Jennifer Jones and her 14 year old daughter Alicia Jenkins were found in a car about 80 feet from shore. Authorities say the car traveled down a dirt road at what they believed was a fast rate of speed and went off a wall into the lake.

The 1999 Mazda Millennium was found in 12 feet of water.

We asked Laurens County Sheriff Ricky Chastain if the deaths were the result of an accident. The Sheriff says the investigation continues.  “At this point we’re not ruling anything out.  Our investigators, along with the Department of Natural Resources, the Highway Patrol and other agencies, and interviewing the last people who saw the victims alive.” [Read more...]

Recession far from over in South Carolina

The state’s unemployment rate experienced a slight drop, as jobless figures in August showed an 11.5 percent unemployment rate compared to July’s figure of 11.7 percent. While a number of economists see the figure as a reason for slight optimism, Sam McClary of the South Carolina Employment Security Commission says indications are that the state may have not seen the worse just yet.

“I think its going to be a few years before we feel like it’s over. I still think we’ve got some rough months ahead of us. over the last three months we have lost people in the labor force because the unemployed have quit looking for work but eventually they’re going to come back in searching for jobs and that is going to push the unemployment rate up.”

McClary says South Carolina’s economy seems to lag behind the rest of the country by about six months. The national unemployment rate for August was 9.7 percent. [Read more...]

AGM Imports Announces new facility in Jasper County

The South Carolina Department of Commerce and AGM Imports announced Tuesday that the company has built its new distribution facility in Jasper County. The $6 million investment is expected to generate 15 new jobs. AGM Imports just recently completed a new distribution facility in Hardeeville.

Chief financial officer Douglas Smith said they are pleased to move forward with plans for a new facility in the Lowcountry. The new facility will allow them to meet demand from their customers in the area and throughout the region.

The new facility will be a sales center as well as serve all other AGM showroom locations, which are in Charleston, S.C., Charlotte, N.C., and Atlanta. In addition, the company also sells granite slabs to builders and fabricators who possess the ability to cut slabs and install them in consumer homes. AGM Imports is in the process of moving from its current location to the new building. The company plans to begin hiring for the positions in the next two months.

Joe Taylor, Secretary of Commerce, said that the company’s decision to locate its new facility in South Carolina is a strong testament that “their business-friendly climate, excellent workforce and market access are working to grow existing businesses and attract new investment.” Taylor added that it is especially gratifying to see this new operation begin in Jasper County, one of the state’s rural areas.

Ballantine Books, an imprint of Random House Inc., said Tuesday it will publish Jenny Sanford’s “inspirational memoir” in May 2010. The publisher says Sanford “will grapple with the universal issue of maintaining integrity and a sense of self during life’s difficult times.” The Associated Press reports that the book is currently untitled. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Mark Sanford acknowledged in June that he had a yearlong affair with an Argentine woman he called his soul mate. Jenny Sanford moved out of the governor’s mansion in August, but she and her husband have said they’re trying to repair their marriage.

Grooms: Wilson is not a racist

After Congressman Joe Wilson’s “You lie” outburst on September 9th to President Obama, the congressman is gaining criticism, but yet support at the same time. Berkeley Senator Larry Grooms stands behind his long-time colleague.

“Joe Wilson is a fine American. He bleeds red, white, and blue. I served with him in the South Carolina Senate for five or six years, Joe Wilson was my mentor. He was the one that really explained to me it’s never about what’s on the surface, there’s always something else with all these bills, you need to understand it. Joe Wilson is a fine American, and I’m proud he is my friend,” says Wilson.

Despite Grooms’ support, Wilson has received blows of criticism from different angles, including racism. The chairman of the Rhode Island Republican Hispanic Assembly and member of the Republican Central Committee, Ivan Marte says he is done with the GOP after Wilson’s outburst. Marte says he has been disenchanted by the GOP since the Rhode Island governor ignored Marte’s advice on illegal immigrants, and Wilson’s outburst did him in. [Read more...]
