State leaders support Carnival cruises, despite concerns

Last week, the South Carolina State Ports Authority and Carnival Cruise Lines announced a year-long regular cruise schedule that will leave directly out of the Port of Charleston. Berkeley Senator Larry Grooms says the new partnership is great for the state.

“That’s excellent news for the State Ports Authority, which has been struggling for the last few years. Now that we have some new leadership at the port, a direction and a focus was placed on: what help can we do to increase business to make South Carolina engines fire? Let’s get our economy going. How can we make the economic engine of our state fire on all cylinders? And one way, an untapped market, is the cruise industry,” says Grooms.

The Carnival Fantasy will have around 70 vessel calls a year, and board nearly 2,000 passengers per voyage. [Read more...]

State’s oldest college begins renovation project

South Carolina’s oldest college has begun a renovation project on some of their oldest buildings. The College of Charleston has buildings dating back to the early 1800s. This week, the Associated Press reports, work is under way on Randolph Hall, Towell Library, and Porters Lodge at the college. The project, that will cost C of C nearly $3.7 million, is expected to take about a year to complete.

Since 1829, Randolph Hall has served as one of the most known buildings on the historic campus. The dome-shaped, column structured building served as the school’s main academic building for years. Now, the hall is used for the college’s administration headquarters. Not only has Randolph Hall served as an academic center for the school, it has also been in several movies filmed in the Lowcountry. For reasons like these, the college wants to renovate the hall and two other sites on campus to keep the history alive at the school.
