The first cases of swine flu have been reported in the state’s prison system. Authorities say 32 inmates have been diagnosed with the flu at the Allendale Correctional Institution. Three of the inmates have tested positive for the HIN1 or swine flu virus. According to prison officials, the infected inmates have been isolated from the general prison population and their cells have been disinfected. Weekend visitation at the prison has been suspended and inmate transfers to and from the prison have been halted. The institution houses over 1200 inmates. The state prison system is giving flu shots to inmates and has asked state health officials to provide swine flu shots as soon as the vaccine is made available.
Overwhelming support floods into Georgia
By Thursday, the death toll in the Georgia floods was up to 10 people. Various organizations, like FEMA and the American Red Cross, deployed to the site of the floods to assist thousands of people who evacuated their homes.
The Lowcountry Chapter of the American Red Cross was one of those local organizations from South Carolina that helped these citizens evacuated from their homes due to the flooding. Greg Talmadge of Kicks 101.5 in Atlanta has seen the influx of assistance from all over. He told a SCRN Charleston affiliate, WTMA, the city has an overwhelming amount of support.

The outpouring of people when I was at the shelter yesterday at the Red Cross, people were bringing goods, diapers, formulas, and anything else to help out. It looked like a mini-Katrina from the size, but nothing quite as large as that. You see the people, their houses just swept away, just literally, cars just swept away. So, for 24 to 48 hours it was a crisis situation in a lot of areas in the city of Atlanta,” says Talmadge. [Read more...]

Now you got six candidates, historically the Democrats usually find one candidate, maybe a secondary candidate for governor. Now, you got six, high profile candidates by the way, six office holders, because they think they have a real opportunity to win,” says Bauer.
In late August, Bauer called for Governor Sanford to resign, saying it was apparent the governor could not focus on the state’s major issues due to constant discussion of the governor’s personal issues. Bauer said he would not run for governor in 2010 if Sanford resign, and he took his seat. However, that did not happen. [Read more...]
