Graham: U.S., NATO need to step up efforts in Afghanistan

South Carolina U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham is continuing his call for more U.S. troops to be deployed to Afghanistan. Appearing on CBS’ Face The Nation” Sunday morning. Graham said President Barack Obama should grant General Stanley McChrystal’s request for 40,000 more troops. Graham says since he lasted visited Afghanistan, the situation has deteriorated and security for civilians is tenuous at best.

“You could have 10,000 State Department lawyers working over there on the rule of law, you can have all kinds of agricultural experts trying to help do away with the drug problem and replace it with commercial agriculture. You just can’t travel. Civilians just can’t operate right now so we need more combat power, not just us but NATO to take the fight back to the Taliban because they have re-emerged.” [Read more...]

GOP candidates seek to emulate Gov. Campbell

Story compiled by Jacob Levy, SCRN

Republicans for governor all promise to focus their efforts on economic development. A majority of them evoke the example of the late-governor Carroll Campbell — as how a governor should recruit industry. Campbell’s name came up throughout last week’s GOP debate for governor.

Lt. Governor Andre Bauer says he wants to emulate Campbell’s work ethic. “He came from mere beginnings, he worked his way up. He served in the general assembly then he served as the governor of this state, but he worked his way up.  He served in many different branches of government which gave him an unbelievable background. But more than that he took business sense when he sat down with companies. He took a business approach when he travelled the world and made us number one in job creation,” says Bauer. [Read more...]

Smaller crowd expected to attend fall bike rally

The Grand Strand Fall Rally, that brings in thousands of bikers from year to year, is expected to have less visitors this year after recent passed laws in the area. In the past, the fall bike rally in Myrtle Beach has brought in more than 40,000 people. This year, Horry County police, and other agencies, predict a much smaller number of bikers for the rally. The rally, that begins this week, according to the Sun News of Myrtle Beach, is expected to draw in from 10,000 to 20,000 people. Horry County Police Sergeant Robert Kegler says additional officers in the area will patrol certain areas with larger crowds.

The expected reasons for the significant drop in numbers this year is due to laws and ordinances passed by local officials that draw the bikers away. Some of the laws include noise ordinances, including a ban on mufflers, riding without helmets, and a ban on parking lot gatherings. The Grand Strand Fall Rally is from September 30 to October 4.
