Verizon has announced that after 22 years, they will not be renewing as the title sponsor for the Heritage Golf Tournament after 2010, saying that they are restructuring their overall involvement with the Professional Golf Association (PGA).

Heritage Tournament Director Steve Wilmot says it was somewhat of a surprise, but not a big one. “ We had hoped right after the tournament last year that we would get into negotiations, which we did to sign a new contract, which we did, but there were a couple of red flags thrown up over the summer.”

The Heritage Classic Foundation and the PGA have already begun the search for a new title sponsor, which Wilmot says should be easier now that Verizon has officially made the announcement.

Wilmot says, “Now that it’s public, that short list becomes a long list. We were contractually obligated under our contract withVerizon not to speak to anyone else, but I have been out on the streets and attending the last several PGA Tour events and working with the tour and their tentacles and reach is an international reach.” [Read more...]

Wilson: My constituents in Afghan War need support

Congressman Joe Wilson is passionate about more than illegal immigration. As the congressman for key military facilities in South Carolina, he has strong opinions about the war in Afghanistan. The president has considered gearing down the U.S. role in that conflict.

“I’m very, very concerned. I represent Ft. Jackson, Parris Island, Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort Naval Hospital. I have a lot of my constituents in Afghanistan; they need reinforcements,” says Wilson.

The White house says it will be up to two weeks from now before a decision is made whether to send more troops to the region. Wilson says understands the region having been there there many times to visit his former National Guard unit. [Read more...]

MUSC tool checks flu status online

The main way the flu spreads is through contact from person to person. Now, the Medical University of South Carolina is trying to catch the flu from spreading faster with a new way for a person to check if he or she has the virus before they even leave his or her house. MUSC Dr. Larry Blumenthal is a creator of the flu symptom evaluator.

“Certain features of the flu, like abrupt onset of fever, people can often can tell you to the minute when they got sick, whereas the common cold tends to creep up on you over a few days. So, the purpose of the evaluation tool is to help people identify when they might have the flu, as well as letting them know when they might need to seek medical attention, and also to hopefully letting people know when to stay home to keep them from affecting others,” says Blumenthal.

Here’s how it works: “A person will answer several questions about their symptoms and based upon known features of the flu, it will give them an answer as to the likelihood of whether or not they have the flu versus some other type of viral illness,” says Blumenthal. [Read more...]

SC hosts national gathering of business leaders

Directors of state leadership programs are gathering today in Charleston to talk about the issues concerning most Americans right now. Those issues include: unemployment, the economy and workforce training.

According to the Associated Press, the state directors will meet this year in South Carolina for the first time ever. About a dozen states are expected to be represented at the meeting, including California and Michigan. Leadership programs usually develop and identify emerging state leaders.

South Carolina’s leadership program is called Leadership South Carolina and is supported by the Clemson Institute for Economic and Community Development. In the program, about 55 people are selected through a competitive process to participate. They then go through specific learning and leadership techniques to see how they interact with others in a business community.
