Labor agency compromises, simplifies immigration check

Reported by Jacob Levy, SCRN

The state is trying to cut the red tape for employee immigration paperwork. Instead of employers having to pull aside workers off the factory lines and out of the fields for audits, now employers simply need to sign a one-page document. Jim Knight, spokesman of the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation says this change works for both sides.

“It’s better for our inspectors. We can get into a place of business, do our audit of employees hired since July 1 and in the end, be able to audit more businesses than we would be able to do otherwise,” says Knight.

This new process is a compromise to answer the frustrations of the state’s business community, who say the process only applied to new hires after July 1.

Freestyle Music Park faces another lawsuit

Freestyle Music Park has only been rollin’ since May and although they say this year was overall successful the park is facing 16 lawsuits for debts owed. The latest lawsuit against Freestyle Music Park was filed by Sheriar Press Inc., a Myrtle Beach company that filed a collections suit in Circuit Court last Tuesday. Despite the recent lawsuits, Freestyle spokesperson Michelle Cantey says they are looking forward.

“We’re making every effort to get in touch with each of our vendors and working out payment terms with them on moneys owed. We are very fortunate that we are being able to move forward on the future of Freestyle Music Park and hope to have an announcement in the very near future,” says Cantey.

Cantey says they expect good things to come in the near future.

“It’s a matter of paperwork at this point, so once everything is confirmed we’ll be happy to make a public announcement,” says Cantey. [Read more...]

NAACP once again takes state meeting out of state

WRHI, Rock Hill

The annual South Carolina State Conference for the NAACP met this weekend– not in South Carolina but in Charlotte. That’s where these meetings have been held for years as a sanction against the state flying the Confederate flag in front of the Statehouse.

The highlights during the conference on Thursday included a job fair and a gubernatorial round table. SC Democrat candidates accepted the invitation to participate in the event.

Charlotte is just over the state line from Rock Hill. President of the Rock Hill NAACP Melvin Poole says the civil rights organization is not only for adults.

“The youth actually have a parallel organization,” said Poole. “They elect their own delegates and run their own convention.  Youth are an important part of the organization.”
