Good Samaritan comes foward after ambulance hit pedistrian

Greenville police say the “good Samaritan” who used his truck to block the road and protect an injured person Friday has come foward to help in analyzing the accident. The pedestrian who was hit by an ambulance on the way to a Greenville hospital Friday night has died.

Forty-six-year-old Oscar Whitner had been on life support since the accident but his family agreed to take him off.

Whitner had been visiting his wife at the hospital just before the accident. Police say no traffic laws were broken.

Greenville Police Sgt. Jason Rampey says a man who he calls a good Samaritan did a really good thing.

“The man pulled his truck into oncoming traffic to shield the individual,” says Rampey. ”And he helped EMS render aid to the individual.”

Rampey says the unidentified man came forward as a witness on Tuesday to help a reconstruction team attempt to understand the incident.

Four Greenville Police Officers accused of beating homeless people

At least four Greenville police officers are under investigation for their alleged beating of homeless people.

Greenville Police Sgt. Jason Rampey says those officers have all resigned.  Rampey says the problem was discovered internally.

SLED Director Reggie Lloyd said the Greenville Police Chief contacted his agency about allegations that the officers beat homeless people. SLED then contacted the FBI because of potential civil rights violations.

Rampey says there isn’t much he can say about the case because of the investigation except that it was not brought to the Police Department’s attention by any members of the public.

The officers may face state charges as well as federal charges.

Port of Charleston celebrates “World Maritime Day”

State Ports AuthorityThe South Carolina State Ports Authority continued its “Pledge for Growth” today at the Port of Charleston. “World Maritime Day is an annual event celebrated all across the country and around the world. The Coast Guard, the Ports Authority, and a number of private sector maritime folks gathered to celebrate it here in Charleston,” says SPA spokesperson Byron Miller. Miller says “World Maritime Day” was a day to celebrate a pledge to create a healthier port, and a cleaner environment.

“This port community is taking a leadership role in protecting the environment and the reason we’re doing that is because we have to grow responsibly, yet at the same time we have to support our customers. So, that balance is essential and we had companies from all across the Charleston area demonstrating that,” says Miller. [Read more...]
