Boeing employees to be trained through readySC

Employees hired for the new Boeing assembly line in North Charleston will be required to go through a training program, which utilizes local technical schools.

Trident Technical College in North Charleston has a readySC program that will train new Boeing employees and get them ready for work. Trident Tech Dean of Aeronautics Studies Program Barry Franco says what readySC is designed to do: “To offer start-up training at no charge to bring companies and businesses into the state,” says Franco.

And one of those companies being Boeing, is adding many new jobs to South Carolina’s workforce. readySC is part of the South Carolina Board for Technical and Comprehensive Education and is a six-week program to help train the Boeing employees already hired. [Read more...]

NC revenue officials advise: There’s cash on the Internet

North Carolina Secretary of Revenue Ken Lay last week addressed members of South Carolina’s Tax Realignment Commission(also known as TRAC), to describe how successful his department has been in a new campaign to obtain more tax revenue from Internet sales to North Carolinians.

Lay says their “digital clickthrough  program draws revenue from a tremendous number of internet purchases in North Carolina.

Lay says up to $4 billion in Internet sales in his state annually could produce up to $500 million in tax revenue.

Lay pointed out that the cost of enforcing Internet sales tax collections declines considerably within the first few years after collection begins, as businesses understand that a state’s officials are serious. [Read more...]

Trident Tech prepares for Boeing

With the announcement of Boeing’s coming to North Charleston, local colleges are gearing up for the work force. Trident Technical College in North Charleston has two aeronautic programs that are getting students ready to work when Boeing comes in to town. Dean of the Aeronautical Studies Program Barry Franco says the school’s aeronautics division offers two different tracks of programs.

“One is in aircraft maintenance, which certifies the individuals to become mechanics, the people who go out and maintain the aircraft once they are put into operation. The other track is in aircraft assembly or aircraft manufacturing program. That certificate program is designed to prepare individuals who seek employment in the aircraft manufacturing industry,” says Franco. [Read more...]

New Morning leads sex ed campaign

A new non-profit organization in South Carolina is working to affect and protect sex education policies in Palmetto State Schools. The New Morning Foundation and its “TellThemSC” website are engaged in a campaign encouraging state citizens to write their legislators.

The organization also advocates access to birth control and right to privacy between patients, and doctor-patient privacy.

Kelly Orner with New Morning says the real issue in sex ed is preventing sexually-transmitted infections. She points out that currently 9,700 South Carolinians are living with AIDS. [Read more...]
