On one side, South Carolina’s Sixth District Congressman James Clyburn leads the fight for passage for the Democrats.

“And for us this caucus to coalesce around a legislation that we have just passed this evening goes well with the people of this caucus, and it goes well for the people of this great country,” says Clyburn. [Read more...]

Catawba chief seeks sovereignty, meets at White House

The Catawba Indian Nation is the only federally recognized Indian tribe in the state of South Carolina. The Catawba Nation and the 563 federally recognized tribes gathered in Washington, D.C. Thursday as President Barack Obama held the first ever American Indian Summit. Catawba Indian Nation Chief Donald Rogers, whose Catawba name is Red Cloud, got the opportunity to shake hands and meet with the president. Rogers says the president delivered an impassioned speech to the gathering.

Chief Rogers in SCRN interview

“He is committed, he said, ‘I will never forget you as long as I’m in office; you will not be our forgotten people.’  And with that it tests us, because a lot of people do call us the forgotten people,” Rogers said.

Rogers says one of the main issues of the Indian tribes is the true recognition of their sovereignty as nations within this country. Rogers says the President showed his sincerity and respect for the federally recognized Indian tribes not just through his words, but also through the appointment of several influential Native Americans to his Cabinet. Sanford insists he’s not trying to block full ethics report

Governor Mark Sanford says there is a misunderstanding concerning the Supreme Court case where justices last week ruled that the court won’t intervene into Sanford’s ethics investigation.

Gov. Mark Sanford

Sanford had argued that no material from the Ethics Commission report should be released before the Commission’s full report on his case is released.

Some observers question if Governor Sanford court case might have been a tactic to stall the possibility of impeachment. Following an Education Department budget hearing Friday, Sanford stated that he was not trying to block release of the Ethics Commission’s full report.

“No. This is what’s very much misunderstood,” said Sanford.  “What we have said is just let them complete their work and release it to the world.  What’s not understood about the ethics process is this preliminary report, this back and forth, is nothing more than a finding of the headlines that you’ve seen in recent months.  The public is not served by a rehash of the headlines.”  [Read more...]

Unclaimed tax refunds await 1,447 South Carolinians

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has released their annual undelivered refunds list.  Thousands of taxpayers nationwide, including 1,447 in South Carolina, are due refund money from the IRS.  IRS Spokesperson, Mark Hanson says, “We just remind taxpayers that there’s more than 1400 taxpayers in South Carolina who are due an average refund check of $957 right now.  It’s a lot of money.  It’s more than 1.3 million dollars.  So if this is your money, basically, you need to come and get it, or you could end up losing it,” he said.

Hanson says that all a taxpayer has to do is update his or her address. “The IRS just reminds people that if your name is on this list, the best way to get your money is to fill out a change of address form.  It’s a form 88-22.  You can download it at IRS.gov, or you can call an 1-800-TAX-FORM and have one sent to you.
