Interview with Speaker Harrell on Sanford censure

House Speaker Bobby Harrell in a statement today praised the work of the panel and the larger committee:

“Again, I must thank the Judiciary Committee for taking the time during this busy holiday season to fully investigate the allegations of serious crimes and serious misconduct made against the Governor.  I applaud their efforts to address this regrettably necessary matter so that, when the General Assembly session arrives, lawmakers can focus on the issues South Carolinians care about the most.

Governor responds to House censure recommendation

Gov. Sanford addresses ethics investigation earlier this year

Gov. Mark Sanford released a statement following the announcement that he may be censured by the South Carolina House of Representatives–and will not be impeached.

His statement:

“I’d make three brief points. First, I’d like to thank the Committee for its work and deliberative approach today and throughout the process.

“Second, we’d concur with the Committee’s reasonable decision to reject impeachment. As we’ve consistently said, this Administration has tried to be a stalwart ally of the taxpayer, and will remain so for the next 13 months.

“Third and finally, I’d join with Speaker Harrell and other legislative leaders in addressing our state’s big picture challenges – from double digit unemployment to the inefficient and unaccountable structure of state government. These recent days and weeks have given us both the best and worst of times, epitomized by yesterday’s two major events: the Budget and Control Board’s grim across-the-board cut to all state agencies, and the equally emblematic inaugural test flight by the Boeing 787 Dreamliner – soon to be another crown jewel of South Carolina exports.

“I’d again ask people from across the state to make their voices heard as we enter the 2010 legislative session – and that we all look for ways in our respective spheres of influence, whether legislatively, in the Executive Branch, or with our hometown businesses and daily conversations, to make South Carolina that much more competitive in the global competition for jobs, investment and way of life.”

House Judiciary Committee votes to censure Gov. Sanford

“Shame, disgrace, ridicule and dishonor” and governor who was “AWOL” from his duties.

All of those are descriptions that were used as legislators struggled over whether to agree  with a subcommittee rejection of a bill to impeach the governor. Instead, the panel opted for a formal rebuke for quote “bringing ridicule to the state.” This was the result of the governors six-day disappearance to Argentina and his public admission of infidelity.

“Make no mistake, a vote to support censure in no way endorses the governor’s behavior,” says Sanford critic Rep. James Smith. “This governor has been irrelevant for the past seven years…let us give no more time and attention to him,” he said with obvious disgust.

Today, members of the special impeachment subcommittee explained the rationales behind their vote to censure rather than impeach Sanford. Committee members of both parties vented their frustrations about the past six months of scandal for the state.

Other comments included Rep. Bakari Sellers on “slippery slope” of allowing Sanford’s behaviour to go without impeachment:

Charity toy drive robbed

A motorcyclists’ rights organization that helps families in need for Christmas was robbed in Myrtle Beach. ABATE, which stands for A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments, provides toys for various families in need. However, last Sunday some ABATE members opened the group’s motorcycle storage shed in Myrtle Beach, realizing more than $1,000 worth of merchandise was stolen. Items that were stolen included donated toys, bikes and dolls.

WBTW reports ABATE Coordinator Rebecca Rowan says “Hopefully, we’re going to get a lot of donations in, and we’ll still be able to take care of those children, but not as well as we have in the past.” Each year, the group choose elementary schools in Horry County to help. These schools find the families that need assistance.

SC budget cut by more than expected

To what could be called a “Grinch” this Christmas, declining state revenues have caused a South Carolina Budget Oversight Board to cut more than it anticipated from state spending plans. After checking the list, and checking it twice, the South Carolina Budget and Control Board has cut the state’s spending plans due to short revenues. On Tuesday, the board cut more than $238 million from the overall $5 billion budget for the fiscal year ending in June. Initially, the budget was predicted to cut about $122 million, but that has doubled. Governor Mark Sanford says as much as he doesn’t like cuts, they have to happen. [Read more...]
