Spratt talks health care with constituents, shares optimism

Fifth District Congressman John Spratt held a telephone town hall meeting with residents of Chesterfield, Darlington, Dillon, Florence and Marlboro counties Tuesday night.

The topic was health care reform. The Senate is debating a bill this week. The House passed a bill previously. The measure will end up in a conference committee where differences will be worked out.

One caller said he felt that the Senate version of health care reform had been watered down so much that it would end up not being worth anything.  Spratt said the situation is better than that.  ”Senate Majority Leader Harry Reed spent about ten days getting it revamped, and he worked not only on the quality of the package, but he made sure that his troops were ready behind him.” [Read more...]

Some Gitmo detainees going to Illinois

President Obama has ordered the purchase of a state prison in rural Illinois which will be the new location for a certain number of suspected terrorists.The detainees are now held at the American prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. That’s a big step toward closing the Guantanamo facility. Some detainees will not be relocated to the new facility.

Administration officials say military tribunals for detainees will be held at the Thomson Correctional Center, about 150 miles from Chicago, a facility which will be transformed to meet top security standards.

For the moment, that leaves the Navy Brig near Charleston out of the picture, as well as another facility in Colorado which had been considered. [Read more...]

Belk gives Charleston port a boost

Belk, Inc., is giving a boost to the Port of Charleston.

The Charlotte-based company which operates more than 300 department stores across the Southeast, has begun importing more than 1,000 shipping containers annually through the Charleston port.

Port officials say that improves the local impact for dock workers, transportation providers and warehouse workers.Belk officials say moving their freight through Charleston instead of using other ports offers a cost savings on transportation. [Read more...]
