Brown, Clyburn announce federal grants to Horry County

Two Lowcountry Congressman have announced federal investments in two local communities. Sixth District Congressman and House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn along with First District Congressman Henry Brown have announced two federal grants in the Horry County area. The Little River Medical Center was awarded $5.5 million funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The funds are to go toward community health centers. The City of Georgetown also received $2.25 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA to improve area drainage.

In a statement, Brown commented on the medical center award. He says “As we experience such harsh economic times and continued high unemployment, these funds will provide much needed relief to the residents of Horry County served by the Little River Medical Center.” Concerning the grant for the City of Georgetown, Brown says: “Improving the City of Georgetown’s flood and storm water system has long been a priority of mine.”

SCFC institutes mandatory unpaid leave

The South Carolina Forestry Commission is instituting a mandatory five-day furlough for all of its employees saving the agency about $200,000.00. The furloughs must be taken between January 2 and June 30, 2010, and translates to a 4.6 percent salary reduction for each employee. SCFC employs approximately 360 people statewide.

Since the beginning of fiscal year 2009, the Forestry Commission has experienced a 33 percent cut to its funding which is $6 million.

Recently, an employee retirement buyout incentive was offered to qualifying staff. Additionally, many vacancies within the agency have gone unfilled. South Carolina Forestry Commission has also cut back on travel and suspended equipment purchases as cost-cutting measures. This is the second furlough for the agency for the 2009 fiscal budget and the third since 2003.
