Charleston rollin’ on two wheels

Since the early 1800′s, bicycling has served as a mode of transportation for many. For cities like Charleston, bicycles are a popular way to get around. Michael Maher with the Charleston Civic Design Center says there’s a revolution underway.

“As the culture of bicycling and thinking about the way in which we live our lives, I think it’s become a more common way of thinking about living in Charleston, and getting around in Charleston. SC House passes state’s rights resolution (Audio)

After more than a week of Democrats speaking against the issue, on Tuesday the South Carolina House passed a concurrent resolution that affirms the state rights amendment found in the U.S. Constitution. The resolution passed on a vote of 85-27.

Williamsburg County Democrat Ken Kennedy accused bill sponsor Eric Beddingfield, the House Majority leader, of submitting the legislation in order to secure his House seat.  Kennedy says that he did not understand Republicans.

House Speaker Bobby Harrell says the measure sends a message to Congress that the federal government is engaging in an unprecedented takeover of power from the states. He says legislation like the Real ID bill and what he calls the attempt to socialize health care are eroding away rights. [Read more...]

SC’s new ad campaign for tourism unveiled (Audio)

The Governor’s Conference on Travel and Tourism wraps up Wednesday at the Marriot Grand Dunes in Myrtle Beach. The conference is attended by interested parties from all over South Carolina.

Director of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Chad Prosser says they have unveiled the new advertising campaign designed to sell the Palmetto State to residents of other states. The ads proclaim that South Carolina is “made for vacation” and feature comments from tourists.

Prosser says even in the recession, the outlook will soon get a little better in the tourism industry.  He says his department expects this spring and summer to be better than last year for those in tourism-related businesses.
