SC ship heads to Haiti to help survivors

A Coast Guard cutter based in South Carolina is heading to Haiti to help in relief efforts. Coast Guard cutter “Dallas” is heading to Haiti to assist victims of the devastating earthquake. The ship will help patrol waters along the coast of Haiti, while also bringing in relief supplies, according to the Post and Courier.

The Dallas is 378-feet long and is carrying with it extra life vests to help in any Haitian boats seen leaving the earthquake’s aftermath. Some of the boats that leave the island are not very safe, the cutter will help assist those boaters. Soon after the earthquake the “Oak,” another Charleston-based ship, left for Haiti as well. The Dallas is expected to be gone from the South Carolina coast for approximately three months.

Earthquake experts say SC should be prepared

Last month, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake devastated Haiti. In South Carolina, seismologist Erin Beutel with the College of Charleston says such earthquakes are closer to home than one may think. “The magnitude earthquakes that occurred in Haiti, magnitude 7, which is approximately the size that the Charleston/Summerville earthquake was in 1886. So, the size of earthquake was equivalent to what we have had before, and the mechanism being relatively shallow, and the straight clip is also similar to what we had in 1886,” says Beutel.

Jenny Sanford’s book hits bookstores, airwaves (Audio)

Reporter Gina Smith at SC Statehouse

South Carolina First Lady Jenny Sanford’s book “Staying True” went on sale Friday. One of the first people to read an advanced copy was reporter Gina Smith of The State newspaper. She and her colleagues broke the story of Gov. Mark Sanford’s affair with a woman in Argentina.  On ABC’s 20/20 Friday night, Ms. Sanford was the focal point of Barbara Walter’s feature story. After her time with network reporters like Walters, the first lady granted the first non-national interview to Smith.  Smith’s story is in The State, Sunday’s edition.

Smith says in “Staying True” Ms. Sanford, who filed for divorce from her husband, does a detailed job of chronicling her marriage with the governor over its 20-year span and reveals that Governor Sanford was restlessly driven to achieve as much as he could at a younger age.  Smith says Jenny Sanford talks about how her husband, as they were getting married, requested that the faithfulness vow be left out of their wedding ceremony, and how the governor once went to New York City to break off the affair, but then wanted to see the woman again.
