DeMint’s SCF “money bomb” not aimed at SC

South Carolina Republican U.S. Senator Jim DeMint has been active in Congress picking up the mantle for the conservative wing of the Republican party and courting the support of the Tea Party movement. Senate Conservatives Fund (SCF) is a political action committee dedicated to electing like-minded conservative leaders to the United States Senate. DeMint has been drumming up support raising funds for conservative candidates across the country working with the SCF.  DeMint and  the SCF is mobilizing its effort for Florida Senate hopeful Marco Rubio.

“RubioMoneyBomb.com is the money bomb we hope to drop on Marco Rubio. He’s a great young candidate in Florida running for the Senate against more of an establishment Republican. He believes in limited constitutional government and I think he is the hew face of the Republican Party,” DeMint told Fox News Wednesday. [Read more...]

Davis opposes wind tunnel tax break (Audio)

The South Carolina Senate as voted to approve half a million dollars in tax exemptions for certain industries locating in the state. But Beaufort County Republican Senator Tom Davis argued against the bill’s final reading, saying that the exemption was only for one company and he said that the Florida company announced almost two years ago that it definitely would locate a facility in South Carolina, and that it would employ 20 people. Davis says the exemption will benefit The Institute for Business and Home Safety, a wind tunnel facility.  And Davis says as far as he knows, the 20 employees who will be working at the facility will be coming from Florida.

Senator Davis says that in the past decade, special tax breaks doled out by state lawmakers have increased from $32 million a year up to $254 million. Davis says other taxpayers have to make up for those exemptions.

Davis says that it doesn’t make any sense to him.

Haley talks education, tea parties

Rep. Nikki HaleyRepresentative Nikki Haley is one of the Republican contenders in the gubernatorial race for South Carolina. Haley was on a Charleston affiliate WTMA talk-show and spoke on matters at hand in the state. One of those matters is education. Haley says there are few education concerns on her mind and some education leaders want a monopoly and that is not the way it needs to be.

“We need to open the doors, allow competition and start paying attention to how we spend money in education. Not just the fact that we are throwing money out,” says Haley.

Haley says there needs to be some focus on teacher pay. [Read more...]

Realtors, counties reach point of sale tax compromise in SC Senate (Audio)

The point of sale tax exemption debate took up the afternoon and evening in the South Carolina Senate Tuesday. Oconee County Republican Thomas Alexander said that the latest compromise between the Association and Realtors and the Association of Counties was reached Tuesday morning. A previous compromise fell apart. Alexander said to make the state more competitive, the focus of the proposal would be on properties in the six percent taxation category. For the current year, those properties would be taxed at their current level. For other years, the taxable value would reduce by 20 percent from the purchase price.

The legislation would eliminate additional taxes at the point of sale on second homes, businesses and commercial real estate for any sales this year. Local governments stand to loose millions because of the change. The compromise amendment was created to correct a problem that realtors say exists in Act 388, passed several years ago, which stipulated that properties would be reassessed when they were sold. That put higher taxes on buyers of second homes and businesses, all taxed at six percent.

After the compromise was passed, senators put up various bills threatening to change the compromise, and threatening the 31 votes which the compromise needed to pass. Those efforts were repeatedly tabled.  Senate President Pro-Tem Glenn McConnell tried to get senators on the same page, all in the name of spurring economic development for the state.
