“I believe Yucca Mountain will open,” says Clyburn (Audio)

South Carolina politicians at all levels are threatening legal action over the concern that Yucca Mountain nuclear repository may not open, possibly leaving the Savannah River Site to fend for itself when it comes to waste storage.

Congressman Jim Clyburn says it’s too soon to worry.  He told South Carolina media today that “They did not put funding for Yucca Mountain in this budget–in this budget. Now, I don’t expect that this will be the last budget. When last year the president sent over his budget, he did nto have funding in there for HBCUs, but the HBCUs got funded.”

Clyburn says new storage technologies need to be developed that will help solve the storage issue. But for now, Yucca Mountain is already behind schedule and still not ready to be opened.

Clyburn says he is more interested right now in developing nuclear science and technologies, which he supports as a major energy source for the state.

Inglis holds town hall meeting for vets

U-S representative Bob Inglis held a pair of town hall meetings in the upstate today to talk with veterans.  Inglis said more services are needed in the area.

Mostly what I hope comes out of this is contractual services so that vets can get local care.  And what also came out of this was the vets’ chances to get their opinions heard, by the people who make decisions on these things in Columbia.

U-S representative Bob Inglis held a pair of town hall meetings in the upstate today to talk with veterans.  Also taking part was Patricia Pittman, the director of the Dorn VA in Columbia.

The town hall meetings were held in Spartanburg and Simpsonville.

Huckabee stumps for Rex Rice

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee was in Greenville Thursday.   Huckabee was the guest speaker at a fundraiser over the noon hour for State Representative Rex Rice, who is running for congress. Huckabee said Rice is the kind of leader the nation needs.

Rex Rice does not believe we need to spend $787 billion dollars to stimulate the economy.  He believes you need to tell small business their taxes aren’t going to increase, that regulations aren’t going to choke them to death, that you’re not going to stomp them with cap and trade which is really cap and tax, and it’s that kind of common sense sanity that Rex Rice will bring to Congress.

Clyburn: Stimulus has stopped the hemorrhaging (Video)

It’s been a year since the federal stimulus package was enacted and South Carolina’s congressional delegation is divided—along party lines–about whether it’s working. While Republicans Mark Sanford and Gresham Barrett are saying the money creates more longterm debt, Clyburn and the Obama administration say that it has “stopped the increased hemorrhaging of jobs” that started before the president took office.

Clyburn used a health care analogy to make his point, answered Ashley Byrd’s questions about sustainability, takes aim at Republican counterparts.

SPA restructuring plan: More responsibilities, salary raises

The South Carolina State Ports Authority has announced a new management restructuring plan that will bring more responsibilities for top officials and provide salary increases. State Ports Authority President and CEO Jim Newsome announced the new plan this week at a monthly SPA board meeting. Newsome says he wants to help align the port’s falling revenue by targeting $7 million in cuts.

Although he could not provide details, Newsome says some of the port’s top officials will take on additional duties, with more pay. Salary increases total more than $62,000, but not all employees who take on more responsibilities will receive raises. The final details of the restructuring plan are expected to be released on March 15. Newsome says some of the extra responsibility shifts are taking place to reflect the new work the port is doing.
