The House is considering legislation that would have increased the size of the board of trustees at South Carolina State in Orangeburg. An amendment discussed this week would have added one member to the 13 current members at the university.
BR Skelton, a Professor Emeritus at Clemson who chairs the House’s Higher Education Subcommittee, moved to table the amendment and it was tabled on a 59-39 vote. Skelton said he first needed input from the school administrators and would meet next week for that purpose.
Orangeburg Democrat Jerry Govan proposed the change, saying it would give the board a total of 13 voting members, since an ex-officio member already serving on the board is not allowed to vote. That way the board could avoid a tie vote.
