Tornado confirmed in Edgefield County

A storm system made its way through the state late Sunday night, bringing rain, thunderstorms and hail to parts of the region. Heavy winds also knocked down trees in a number of areas. Emergency Preparedness Director Mike Casey of Edgefield County says that they have confirmation that much of the damage was done by the touchdown of tornadoes. “We have a picture of the first funnel cloud that formed. as well as a map showing the track of it. Both tornadoes followed approximately the same track coming into Edgefield County.”

Casey said they’ve been busy today assessing the damage. “We’re out now doing some damage assessment. We know of at least one house that had a couple of trees to go through the roof and that family was displaced. There were reports of additional damage that was discovered after daylight today, and we’re going to assess that now.”

Tornado watches and warnings were issued throughout the night for much of the state. South Carolina utilities that serve the damaged area were out trying to restore service.

Sentencing reform contains re-entry program (Audio)

State legislation that would add certain reforms to prison sentencing is up for final reading in the state Senate this week and will be waiting for House members when they return in April following a two-week furlough.

The bill would direct the probation and parole system take control of more non-violent offenders and put them in ankle bracelets. But lawmakers say, just as importantly to reducing the need for new prison facilities, it would provide a re-entry program that would keep inmates from returning to prison.

Lexington County Republican Jake Knotts, a retired law enforcement officer, spent his professional career dealing with those who break the law, and with the court system. And he says the Omnibus Crime Reduction and Sentencing Reform Act would make a difference.

Knotts says a re-entry program is an essential part of prison reform–something that the South Carolina Department of Corrections has been sorely lacking.

Spratt tapped for federal commission for fiscal reform

Reported by Matt Long, SCRN

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi last week announced the appointment of South Carolina representative John Spratt to the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform. The Commission consists of 18 members including 12Representatives and Senators (six from each party) and six members from outside Congress.

The commission is tasked with finding a way to reduce the federal deficit to only three percent of the gross national product by 2015. The commission will release a report by December 5.

Spratt comes to the panel from the House Budget Committee where he has served for more than decade. He played a large part in creating a federal surplus with the passage of the 1997 Balanced Budget Agreement.

The commission has to have 14 of the 18 members approval for any recommendations it makes.

DeMint, Graham take GOP lead against health care bill

U.S. Senators Jim Demint and Lindsey Graham both appeared Sunday on national political talk shows to argue the Republican case against the new health care law. Graham on “Meet the Press” accused the passage process of being “the worst of Washington and it was not transparent.” Graham warns, “We’re going to have a spirited civil contest about the size and shape of government and health care will be center stage.”

Graham said, “There’s a reason no Republican voted for this thing. It’s not that we don’t care about people and we don’t want to lower costs. This lost its focus. It got to ‘There’s a noble effort started by the president,’ then it got to be, ‘I got to pass the bill because my presidency’s at stake.’ This idea it reduces the deficit is a flat-out lie. You don’t include the money we’re going to spend to fix the doctor problem, which is $200 billion. So they took it out of the health care bill and put it in the jobs bill to make it look like it cuts the deficit. If you add the money we’re all going to spend to help doctors not get cuts, that wipes out the deficit.”

DeMint says the bill will destroy the health care system and bankrupt the country. He appeared on CBS’s “Face the Nation” and focused on how this new law may be used against the Democrats in November. He told host Bob Schieffer,”The president is mocking Americans who continue to be against this bill. He said, ‘Bring it on’ – that’s what we intend to do.” [Read more...]
