Ott: Lawmakers should have saved

State lawmakers will return next week after a furlough. Next month a select panel from the House and Senate will gather to hammer out their differences on the state’s budget. The state faces a half a billion dollar shortfall this budget year alone. State agencies are facing major cutbacks.

Democrats say that a big part of the problem has been the failure of the Republican-led General Assembly to keep reserve funds. Leading House Democrat Harry Ott says that’s actually one principle he has had in common with Governor Mark Sanford, that it helps to keep something in the bank.

We never accumulated any reserves.  When times were good and we had more revenue coming in than we needed, we never accumulated a fund balance that would help to get us through these very difficult times.

SC law enforcement says federal tax program fights crime

Expanding the federal Child Tax Credits would help reduce crime in South Carolina according to local law enforcement. Rock Hill Police Chief John Gregory joined Fairfield County Sheriff Herman Young, Sumter Chief of Police Patty Patterson and 16th Circuit Deputy Solicitor Willie Thompson in Rock Hill Wednesday, calling for the expansion of the credits for working families as a way to prevent future crime. The federa tax credit of 15 percent of earned income, goes up to $1000 per child, for families with children.  Right now, families begin to get the credit once they have earned $3000.  As enhanced by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act helps 253,000 children in South Carolina.
