Wilson: His health care bill repeal won’t pass in this Congress

Congressman Joe Wilson is traveling around the 2nd Congressional District during his week off, garnering opposition against the health care plan. Wilson is offering legislation to repeal the plan.

Senator Jim Demint has also introduced a repeal. But he commented this week that he doesn’t believe his repeal will have an affect under this Congress or President Obama. Wilson agrees, about his own measure as well.

I introduce legislation because I believe it’s a positive initiative.  It really should be considered by this Congress.  But what will be most helpful is if we had change in November, change in the majority membership of the House and Senate.

In Beaufort Friday Wilson will lead a rally where participants will sign a pledge to repeal the plan and replace it with free-market reforms that he says will lower health care costs. His Siding With America’s Patients Act(also known as SWAP) he says would cover pre-existing conditions while including the ability to shop for insurance across state lines. It would also limit excessive malpractice awards.

SCDOT wants input on road planning process (Audio)

If you’ve ever caught yourself saying that no one in government cared what you have to say, know that the South Carolina Department of Transportation(SCDOT) is conducting a survey to review the effectiveness of its plan for receiving public input. The department regularly asks for public opinion on road projects and other issues.

SCDOT Director of Planning Ron Patton says feedback from the public will help shape the process which the department uses to engage all interested parties in order to get essential information about transportation planning. That means everything from potholes in your local road and repaving needs, to new road construction.

Missing SC soldier from Vietnam War buried today

A Spartanburg soldier who was missing in the Vietnam War has been identified and will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery today.

The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office announced late Thursday that the remains of four U.S. servicemen, missing in action from the Vietnam War, have been identified and returned to their families for burial with full military honors.

Spc. Thomas Rice, Jr. of Spartanburg will have an individual burial at Arlington. A group burial will also be conducted with the remains of his fellow servicemen. They are: Chief Warrant Officer Kenneth L. Stancil, Chattanooga, Tennessee; Chief Warrant Officer Jesse D. Phelps, Boise, Idaho;  and Spc. Donald C. Grella, Laurel, Nebraska.

According to a DOD release, the four men were aboard a UH-1D Huey helicopter that never returned from a mission over Gia Lai Province, South Vietnam to pick up special forces soldiers on Dec. 28, 1965. The exact location of the crash site was not determined during the war, and search and rescue operations were suspended after failing to locate the men after four days. Between the years 1993 to 2005, special teams could not locate the crash site.

The DOD reports:

In April 2006, a joint team interviewed two local villagers, one of whom said he had shot down a U.S. helicopter in 1965. The villagers escorted the team to the crash site where wreckage was found. In March 2009, another joint team excavated the area and recovered human remains and other artifacts including an identification tag from Grella.
