Democratic Weekend to draw thousands (AUDIO)

The South Carolina Democratic Party says it is expecting the annual Democratic Weekend to draw thousands of people to events scheduled tonight and Saturday in Columbia. Most events will be held at the Columbia Metro Convention Center.

State Party Chair Carol Fowler says the festivities begin with the annual Jefferson-Jackson Dinner Friday night, featuring guest speaker Steny Hoyer, the Majority Leader of the U.S. House.

The state Democratic Convention takes place Saturday morning, followed by a barbeque lunch and stump meeting, featuring many democratic candidates.

Fowler says the annual events generate funds for the needy party–around $100,000 each year.

Roll call vote bill headed to Senate subcommittee (AUDIO)

A bill that would require all votes in the state Senate to be role call votes was discussed in the Senate Thursday. Currently many votes in both the House and Senate are taken as voice votes. Opponents say it would be a waste of valuable time in a legislative session which some lawmakers say is already the longest in the country.

Beaufort County Republican Senator Tom Davis brought the bill forth, but his collegues argued that the legislative year will soon enter its last month, with the budget and other legislation still to be debated, and it should not be held up. Davis withdrew his motion, allowing the bill to be discussed in a Senate subcommittee.
