SC couple dies from carbon monoxide fumes

A couple from Hilton Head died in their home from carbon monoxide intake. Seventy-two year old Edward Cavanaugh and his wife, 69-year-old Karen, died in their Hilton Head home after carbon monoxide from their running vehicle leaked into their home through a door from the garage.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office ruled the deaths accidental. Reports say the couple left their car on in the garage, with the door open, allowing the fumes to spread through the house. The couple was found in the living room after a neighbor picked up their newspaper the next day, and noticed that the car was still running, unattended. No word on why the couple left the car running and the door open.

Sellers opposes GOP reasons for Voter ID Bill

South Carolina House members passed the Voter ID Bill last week on a key vote. The bill requires that anyone who votes show a state photo identification card. There are approximately 178,000 South Carolinians without a proper state identification card.

“That’s a problem. So, you had to make a way to get the ID’s. So, what we did was we laid off teachers, we laid off police officers, our court system is almost shut down, and we decided to spend about $1 million on voter ID’s so you could go down and get your picture taken. But, fundamentally, the Republican party says this as a way they were going to combat voter fraud. How many instances of voter fraud have we had in South Carolina in the last five years?” says Bamberg Democrat Bakari Sellers. [Read more...]

DeMint introduces Border Fence Amendment

Senator Jim DeMint has introduced an amendment to the Financial Reform Bill that would require a fence along the border of the U.S. and Mexico be completed within one year. “What we’re talking about, and what was actually passed in the law a few years ago is a 700-miles of double-layer fencing, which allows the patrol vehicles to go between them. They have motion detectors of people who get over the fence, and get between them, we would know they were there. And, the areas where they have completed a double-layer fence, it’s dried up illegal immigration,” says DeMint.

DeMint’s amendment follows a promise by Congress four years ago to secure the border under the Secure Fence Act of 2006. The amendment was approved by the Senate last year in a bipartisan vote, but Democrat leaders shut it down “behind closed doors,” according to DeMint. [Read more...]

SC House passage of teen license bill postponed (AUDIO)

Final reading was postponed in the South Carolina House until next week on legislation that would take driver’s licenses away from teenagers who drop out of school or have seven or more unexcused absences.

Aiken County Republican Tom Young, the bill’s main sponsor, said that information about the measure had been sent to members of the House this week that was incorrect. Young says the bill would not change the mandatory attendance age for public education to age 18. Currently students are required to attend school until they reach 17.

Young read from a 21-year-old report from a commission led by then Lt. Governor Nick Theodore which first recommended the proposal.
