Rand Paul, the son of Ron Paul, is facing attacks for statements that he opposes part of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Rand Paul won Kentucky’s GOP Senate nomination.
Paul said, “I’m not in favor of any discrimination of any form. I would never belong to any club that excluded anybody for race.” Paul said discrimination and segregation are a stain on history. But he says he does not agree with a provision in the bill that makes it a crime for businesses to discriminate on the basis of race, and he doesn’t believe the government should be able to intrude on how private business is run.
South Carolina Congressman Jim Clyburn, House Majority Whip, told MSNBC Thursday that Paul speaks for the tea party movement that he’s a part of, and he finds his position disturbing.
He made it clear to the voters in America exactly what their movement is all about. They are sending signals, saying things, that ought to give all of us great pause.
