Clyburn comments on Rand Paul’s statement about the Civil Rights Act

Rand Paul, the son of Ron Paul, is facing attacks for statements that he opposes part of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Rand Paul won Kentucky’s GOP Senate nomination.

Paul said, “I’m not in favor of any discrimination of any form. I would never belong to any club that excluded anybody for race.” Paul said discrimination and segregation are a stain on history. But he says he does not agree with a provision in the bill that makes it a crime for businesses to discriminate on the basis of race, and he doesn’t believe the government should be able to intrude on how private business is run.

South Carolina Congressman Jim Clyburn, House Majority Whip, told MSNBC Thursday that Paul speaks for the tea party movement that he’s a part of, and he finds his position disturbing.

He made it clear to the voters in America exactly what their movement is all about.  They are sending signals, saying things, that ought to give all of us great pause.

Poll shows Haley jump to lead in GOP primary race (AUDIO)

A new national poll puts Lexington Representative Nikki Haley in the lead of GOP governor’s race contenders.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of “Likely Republican Primary voters” shows Haley earning 30 percent support. She’s followed by State Attorney General Henry McMaster at 19 percent and Congressman Gresham Barrett with 17 percent. Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauer captures 12 percent of the vote.

Rasmussen research shows nearly one-in-five potential primary voters (18 percent) remain undecided.

The new findings mark a dramatic turn of events for Haley who ran fourth in March with just 12 percent support. McMaster earned 21 percent of the vote at that time, with Bauer at 17 percent and Barrett at 14percent.

Rasmussen Reports President Scott Rasmussen contends that the Palin visit did much to rally this support for Haley. We spoke with him today when the GOP numbers were released.

Myrtle Beach airport opens new general aviation terminal

Ribbon cutting for the new general aviation terminal at the Myrtle Beach International Airport happens Friday. Spokesperson Lauren Morris says the brand new facility was greatly needed.

“It is a $4.5 million terminal for general aviation, which is a significant part of the aviation community in South Carolina. It’s just a beautiful facility. It was sorely needed, as the previous general aviation terminal was left-over from when it was an Air Force Base operations facility. We are so excited about it, it’s a full-service FBO. It’s over 11,000 square feet, very modern,” says Morris.

Morris says funding came from different agencies.

“We had received some grants from the state, it was a portion of the Airport Enterprise Fund. We received some funding from the Myrtle Beach Development Air Force Authority. It was definitely a conglomeration of things, and a lot of people contributed to the success of it, which we are very grateful,” says Morris. [Read more...]
