Myrtle Beach sunbather run over by truck, now in worse condition

Accident scene, amidst scattered sunbathers

A sunbather Myrtle Beach that was run over by a beach service truck a week ago near 8th Avenue North.  Observers decribed the accident scene as “gruesome”  on a nearly-deserted beach about 100 yards from the new boardwalk.  

According to reports, the victim, 34-year-old Erik Randall Rabon was run over by a Huggins Beach Service truck near the water’s edge. Emergency medical workers transported him to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, where his condition has been downgraded to “serious.”

SC student group says their voices matter in energy policy (AUDIO)

A group of students from colleges across the state say they have a voice in energy policy. Palmetto Environmental Action Coalition held a press conference Friday afternoon outside of Sen. Lindsey Graham’s office in Columbia. They want him to reconsider his backing away from what is now called the American Power Act.

Winthrop University student Lorena Hildebrandt says the students are presenting Sen. Graham’s office with a petition signed by more than 300 students.

SC unemployment improves for third straight month

The new interim director of the new state employment agency got to announce some good news for the South Carolina economy. John Finan and the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce reports the state’s unemployment rate declined for the third straight month to 11.6 percent in April.  This was down significantly from the March rate of 12.2percent, meaning fewer people lost their jobs in April and fewer people entered the labor force to look for jobs.

All counties experienced an improvement. And the three worst hit – Marlboro, Marion and Allendale–are now at under 20 percent unemployment. [Read more...]

In Democratic primary, polls show Sheheen in lead

A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of likely Democratic Primary voters in South Carolina shows Kershaw Senator Vincent Sheheen with 30 percent support, closely followed by State Superintendent of Education Jim Rex with 22 percent. State Senator Robert Ford trails with four percent of the vote.

Among Democrats polled, 12 percent prefer some other candidate in the race,with another 32 percent are undecided.This is a much higher rate of undecided voters than in the GOP race.

The independent polling company surveyed 404 people classified as “Likely Democratic Primary Voters” in South Carolina on May 17, 2010. Scott Rasmussen says Sheheen appears to be benefiting from his television advertising in the state, while Rex is the only Democrat who currently holds a statewide office. [Read more...]
