The first woman to be a Republican candidate for governor in South Carolina, Nikki Haley won the GOP nomination in Tuesday’s runoff over Congressman Gresham Barrett. Haley is also the first Indian-American to lead a major ticket in the state.
Haley had 65 percent of the vote. She will face Democrat Vince Sheheen in November.
She gave her acceptance speech during a party at the State Museum. For his support, she thanked Attorney General Henry McMaster, who was her foe in the Republican primary until two weeks ago.
