BMW to hire 500 workers

BMW Manufacturing announced Thursday that it will hire 500 new employees in the next few months to get ready for production of the next generation BMW X3.  The positions will be full-time, production jobs with benefits.  BMW spokesman Bobby Hitt:

When we get finished with hiring these 500 we will be over 6,000 people on site. We’ll see how it goes from there and see how the economy goes, and we will continue to adjust the workforce. 

Job fairs will be held in the coming weeks to fill the positions.

Charleston man arrested for distribution of child pornography

Attorney General Henry McMaster announced Thursday the arrest of a man for distribution of child pornography. James Madison Prevatt, II, age 33, of Charleston, was arrested by the Charleston Police Department on Wednesday, and has been charged with one count of Sexual Exploitation of a Minor, 2nd Degree, a felony offense punishable by two to ten years imprisonment, and one count of Lewd Act on a Minor, a felony offense punishable to fifteen years imprisonment and a fine. Preterm births: Serious health risk to mom and baby

On average per week 184 babies are born too soon in South Carolina. Dr. Alan Fleischman, Senior Vice President and Medical Director of the March of Dimes Foundation says that half-a-million babies who are born premature in the United States every year, “and that is a major problem. ”

According to reports the cost is $26-billion dollars every year in the U.S., but if some of that prematurity can be prevented, ” much of that money can go for other health care services,” says Fleischman. [Read more...]

Mulvaney gets support from MN governor

Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty stopped in Rock Hill on Wednesday to help raise funds for State Senator Mick Mulvaney in his campaign to unseat U.S. 5th District Congressman John Spratt. Pawlenty spoke to a crowd of around 100. WRHI was there.

Gov. Pawlenty’s Freedom First PAC endorsed and gave money to several South Carolina candidates in this fall’s elections including $3,500 to Nikki Haley, $3,000 to Senator Jim DeMint, $2,000 to Tim Scott, $2,000 to Alan Wilson, $2,000 to Jeff Duncan, and $2,000 to Trey Gowdy.  Tuesday night, he attended a fundraiser for the state GOP at the home of Chair Karen Floyd in Spartanburg, along with Nikki Haley.

SC cig tax hike now in effect (AUDIO)
