Insurance industry: Know the liabilities in summer parties

In a national survey, more than 98.6 million households plan to host a party or a social gathering this summer. Summertime is a big time for families and friends to host parties -many times sharing a cool one and other alcoholic beverages.

Bob Rusbuldt, CEO and President with Independent Insurance Agents says the host may be liable when serving alcohol at summer parties.

Rusbuldt says if you host a party and your guest drives away intoxicated, then has an accident, you can be held liable.

Probably one of the most important things, and in recent years because of MADD and groups like that, is to arrange transportation for anybody that you think might have had too many drinks. Don’t let them drive, call them a cab, have a friend, have a relative or somebody drive them home, or have them stay overnight.

Personal liability insurance policies as well as state laws vary, so it’s important to know where you stand says Rusbuldt.

Liquor liability laws vary state to state. All liability and tort laws vary state to state. And of course homeowners policies vary by company and the amount you’re willing to pay for liability in that coverage. Most homeowners policies are around the $330,000 level in liability.
