Greene elects to take the podium (AUDIO)

South Carolina U.S. Senate candidate Alvin Greene remains a mystery to many voters even after his surprise win in the June 8 Democratic primary. Greene attempted to lift the veil on his candidacy in his first campaign speech Sunday to the Manning branch of the NAACP before a packed gymnasium at Manning Junior High School. The crowd included a number of members from local, state and national media.

Speaking in slow, deliberate tones during his nearly seven minute speech, Greene says his candidacy is about securing employment for state citizens. Greene says he will work to improve the state’s public school system, Greene pointed out that the state has made massive cuts in education, despite education’s woeful record.

Greene says in an effort to create jobs, he will work to see that the state moves toward improving its infrastructure, including its roads and highways.

When commenting on the state’s criminal justice system , Greene seemed to be referring to himself when he said that the punishment should fit the crime. Last November, Greene was charged in Columbia, which is in the 5th Judicial Circuit, with an obscenity charge. A female student at the University of South Carolina said he showed her Internet pornography in a computer lab and tried to go to her dorm room with her. Greene was due in state court last week. The case was continued.

SCDOT Chair: Arrival of Boeing presents infrastructure challenge (AUDIO)

In 2009 when Boeing announced that it was locating an assembly plant in South Carolina, it was clear that the corporation would bring 12,000 jobs to South Carolina over the next three years.  Boeing announced Thursday that it will locate its new 787 Dreamliner interiors fabrication facility at a North Charleston site 10 miles from the main plant.  The main plant is set for completion in the Spring of 2011 and that means thousands of workers will be headed to and from that area on a daily basis.  South Carolina Department of Transportation Director Buck Limehouse says that offers a great challenge, to get the roads ready for that kind of traffic flow.

Limehouse says part of the challenge during this economic climate is finding the funds to improve the roads for the new industry.   So far the only funds allocated for road projects in the plant area is $5 million from Charleston County set aside out of their half-cent sales tax, specifically to improve a number of intersections near the plant site.  Limehouse says with the commitment that the state has made to Boeing he is confident that a workable funding formula will be created for infrastructure improvements.

South Carolina unemployment benefits going paperless (AUDIO)

The SC Department of Employment and Workforce will begin today phasing out paper checks given for weekly unemployment payments. The agency will instead offer “plastic”–electronic payment options including prepaid debit cards. Also, the agency has offered direct deposit into bank accounts since 2008.

Department of Employment and Workforce Executive Director John Finan says it’s part of an effort to streamline service in a more efficient and cost effective manner.

Agency spokesman Clark Newsom says it will save the agency $4 million a year and save claimants from having to pay check cashing fees.

Sales tax holiday planned for August (AUDIO)

Those planning some back-to-school shopping may want to take note. South Carolina’s 11th annual back-to-school “Sales Tax Holiday” weekend has been scheduled between midnight Friday, August 6 and Sunday August 8. The state’s sales tax will be lifted on purchases of clothes, shoes, school supplies, book bags, as well computers and printers.

Department of Revenue Public Relations Director Adrienne Fairwell says the holiday will drop the six percent state sales tax as well as applicable local taxes.  South Carolina shoppers typically save about $2.8 million in sales tax during the event.

Fairwell says it’s usually the third busiest shopping period of the year in the Palmetto State, next to the weekend after Thanksgiving and the weekend before Christmas.
