Tea party ralliers endure heat for Biden, Spratt (AUDIO)

Following his appearance at the dedication of a new USC library dedicated to former Senator Fritz Hollings, Vice President Joe Biden appeared Friday afternoon with his close friend Congressman John Spratt for a fundraiser.  The event at the State Museum was protested by a few hundred Tea Party members, who stood outside in the sun with a 110 degree heat index to show their opposition to both Democrats.

But that didn’t appear to dampen the enthusiasm of people like Joe Duncan of York County.

I-385 project complete, ahead of schedule

After months of construction, the I-385 rehabilitation project that ran from Laurens county to I-26 is now complete. At a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the occasion Friday, South Carolina Secretary of Transportation Buck Limehouse said:

I am just proud of my guys and I’m proud of the contractor. I’m proud of the local officials, the highway patrol and everybody working together. It’s the way government should work. We should make the trains run on time and this time we did.

State Senator DannyVerdin also attended the event:

All in all, the engineers and planners did a good job here and it’s to our long-term benefit.  Some short-term inconveniences, but I think everyone agrees it was a job well done.

The project which began in January and has been completed two weeks ahead of schedule. The highway was opened to traffic Friday.  Read the scope of the project.

Workforce Centers to open Saturday

Workforce Centers statewide will be open this Saturday, after President Obama signed the unemployment extension bill, an extension of the federally-funded Emergency Unemployment Compensation and Extended Benefits program.

South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce spokesman Clark Newsom says the 36 offices will be open between 8 am and noon Saturday, expecting a large turnout, to assist people who are entitled to unemployment benefits but who haven’t been filing their claims eash week.  Newsom says the Saturday hours are only for those claimants who have not been filing.  Newsom says if you think you’re entitled to unemployment benefits and have received them before, but you haven’t been making your regular Saturday or Sunday calls to the Department of Employment and Workforce to file your claim, you will need to go into an office to file.

Newsome says he expects that the first checks will be mailed Monday. These extensions will go to people who have exhausted their state-funded regular unemployment benefits, who meet other eligibility criteria.

Clemson sees record applications, academics in freshmen

Clemson University officials told its trustees they are expecting this year’s freshman class of 2,950 students to be the strongest class ever academically.

Marvin Carmichael, chief of staff for President James Barker, says:

At this point in time the students that we feel are still active in planning to come this fall have the highest SATs, the highest class rank, and show the strongest records that we’ve seen.

Carmichael says in spite of a tuition increase, the number of applications for Clemson are at an all-time high too. He says that parents should not worry about sticker shock:

We feel Clemson is affordable. And I think students and families need to look at net cost. For example, there will be no entering freshmen from South Carolina this year paying sticker price. 99 percent of them will receive a state scholarship. And then the balance will receive financial aid of some sort–that’s a given.

Clemson officials say this fall they will also see an increase in transfer students.

President James F. Barker reported that the university’s version of an economic stimulus plan for students — a need-based program– will continue this year in order to help students who have been there at least three years. Carmichael explains:

These are people who may not necessarily have retained their life scholarship but are on the track to graduate. So we are targeting lowest income students, allowing them to receive up to $2,000 if they are a senior and are graduating, assuming they have grades for graduation. So our goal is for those students who just need a slight bump to get them over the edge to graduate, we want them to go ahead and graduate and be productive citizens.

Clemson’s board also approved a $797 million budget for fiscal year 2010-2011 that shows a 17 percent decrease in administrative and support costs, reflecting the impact of state budget cuts, but also an anticipated 23 percent increase in scholarships and fellowships awarded to students.

DeMint speaks out in support of Arizona immigration law

South Carolina Senator Jim DeMint said Wednesday that the federal government should not be suing Arizona and will attempt to amend legislation to prevent the Obama administration from doing so over its controversial immigration law.

It doesn’t make sense if you read the bill, and I read the bill and all it says is that Arizona is going to enforce the federal law. States do that all the time with federal law, and the hard thing to understand is there’s sanctuary cities where the local governments thumb their nose at the federal government and says “we’re not going to enforce any of your laws,” and we leave them alone. And then you’ve got someone like Arizona that puts a law in place and says “we’re going to enforce the federal laws.” [Read more...]
