Anderson sheriff makes arrest in murder case after five years

The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office has arrested 23-year-old Raymond Groves of Anderson in connection with the shooting death of James Wells in October of 2005. The shooting happened in the parking lot of the Bamboo Garden Restaurant on the Highway 28 Bypass.

Regina Wells, the victim’s daughter, spoke for the family at a press conference Tuesday afternoon.

I was a Daddy’s girl. And it’s hard thinking that the one person you think nothing would ever happen to, and it happens. It’s the most horrible thing that I hope no one ever has to experience.

Groves is being held in the Anderson County Detention Center. Sheriff John Skipper:

We developed some information a month ago. As a result we got a warrant on Raymond Groves. He has been charged with murder. He also has another drug case outstanding.

Skipper said the case is still an ongoing investigation which could lead to more suspects.

Graham to face Charleston Tea Party members

Senator Lindsey Graham is set to visit North Charleston Wednesday to discuss his positions and votes on Tea Party issues. A core group of Tea Party activists are upset with Graham for reaching across party lines on immigration and energy reform. Joanne Owens with the Charleston Tea Party says they were asked a few months back about posing questions to the senator concerning some of these issues.

Several of us were at a breakfast that he spoke at back in April at Aunt B’s in North Charleston, and he expressed interest in coming to Tea Party people. We’ve been working very hard for the past couple of months to make this happen. They gave a call last week and had announced that Lindsey was going to be in town and they had already secured a venue. Hurricane Earl too close for comfort (AUDIO)

The first major storm of the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season, Hurricane Earl, has emergency personnel gearing up for a possible landfall along the Atlantic Seaboard. Earl is now categorized as a Category 4 storm packing winds in the neighborhood of 135 miles an hour. Weather experts say the path of Earl could include a brush with the North Carolina coast around Friday and that is close enough for safety personnel in South Carolina to stay on the alert. In a Tuesday morning teleconference, Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Craig Fugate says a definite landfall has not been forecast, but FEMA is prepping its personnel and resources.

A Category 4 hurricane could include a storm surge of 13 to 18 feet which would lead to major beach erosion, accompanied by flooding well inland. Fugate says persons who live along the predicted path of Earl should be reviewing their emergency plans at this point and that would include preparing for a possible evacuation.

Fugate says that evacuations are coordinated with FEMA and the help of the National Hurricane Center.  Local authorities make decisions concerning clearance time, which is the time that it takes to get people to safety in an orderly manor.

Bill Read, Director of the National Hurricane Center’s Tropical Prediction Center says even if Earl does not make landfall along the Atlantic Coast, it will likely come close enough to significantly affect the weather from the Carolinas to New England.

Hurricane Earl threatens Labor Day beachgoers

Summer beach tourist season usually ends Labor Day weekend

Those heading to the beach for Labor Day weekend are being urged to stay safe.

Hurricane Earl is strengthening into a Category 4 storm as it passes through the warm waters of the Gulf Stream. For the second weekend in a row, that might make things dangerous for swimmers along the South Carolina coast. While forecasters predict Earl will easily miss South Carolina, its presence offshore will cause dangerous rip currents for swimmers in the Lowcountry and Grand Strand.
