Reeves: Remove Thurmond’s name from buildings to improve racial relations (AUDIO)

Morgan Bruce Reeves at the Thurmond Federal Building in Columbia

A gubernatorial candidate under both the Green and United Citizens parties says he’s leading a protest calling for Strom Thurmond’s name to be removed from many of the buildings and parks around the state. Morgan Bruce Reeves stood in front of the Thurmond Federal Building in Columbia while a few of his supporters carried signs calling for the name removal.

Reeves says Thurmond fathered a child with a teenage African American in the 1920′s and later ran for President as a segregationist.  He called Thurmond a pedophile and said that subject should be openly discussed to improve racial relations.

Rep. Limehouse on Daniel’s Law: “We can do better than this”

A Charleston legislator wants to amend the state’s safe haven law, commonly known as Daniel’s Law, which allows parents to safely abandon their children for up to 30-days-old with no penalty. Charleston Representative Chip Limehouse wants to change that limit to five years old. Limehouse says he was prompted by the recent case of a mother killing her two toddlers and then submerging her car –with their bodies inside—in a nearby river.

Currently, the law states that a parent can drop an infant at a hospital, police station or other designated places, as long as the child is left in an employee’s hands.

Representative Limehouse talks to Ashley Byrd about the Safe Haven for Children bill, which is ready to be prefiled in the state legislature next week:

Graham: I do reach across the aisle

Tea Party activists are expected to pack into the North Charleston City Hall today to hear from a man that’s not been a fan-favorite of the group.

I do reach across the aisle. I’m gonna do what I think is best for Conservatism and governing the country and fixing problems. I’m not going to yell slogans for the rest of my life. I would like to get this country back in business.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham has been accused of switching party lines on issues such as immigration and energy reform. Today, he defended that:

The truth is if you go down the Tea Party agenda about what they want, I’m gonna be with them about 80 to 90 percent of the time, and I just want to let them hear that from me and ask me questions. We can focus on the 10 percent of the time that we disagree, that will be fine, but I want to let them know that their anger is understandable. [Read more...]
