As BMW begins production of a new type of SUV at its plant in Spartanburg County, the carmaker is planning to hire hundreds of new employees for the expansion.
BMW says it needs 500 contingency workers in the upcoming months as it begins production of the second-generation X3 sports utility vehicle. The company said it is increasing its workforce to respond to strong demand for its SUVs. The hirings would bring the total number of employees at the plant near Greer to over 7,000.
In a statement from BMW, President Josef Kercher said the move was necessary.
As production of the new X3 gets underway and sales of the X5 and X6 continue to do very well around the world, we see the need to expand our production team again to ensure we are well-prepared to meet our forecasted demand.
Employees will be hired by MAU Inc., which will be examining prospective employees over the next month. Qualified applicants can attend job fairs at the Greenville OneStop on September 9, 15, or 22. MAU will also hold job fairs in Spartanburg once renovations are finished at the Spartanburg Community College’s Tyger River campus.
The X3 is billed as a “compact crossover” and is smaller than the two other models already built at the plant, the X5 and X6. It was previously made in Austria until the redesign. It hits the market in November.
