Former DMV manager charged with embezzlement

A former South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) employee has been arrested and accused of embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) announced the arrest of 39-year-old Wendy Gaskins of West Columbia after she turned herself in Tuesday.

According to the arrest warrant, Gaskins is accused of stealing more than $300,000 in public funds while while she worked as a facilities manager with the SCDMV. She allegedly used the money to pay for home renovations, a mortgage and a travel camper.

Gaskins is also accused of putting stolen money into a fake construction company known as “J. Creech Construction”–money that was slated for DMV projects.

SLED continues to investigate the case at SCDMV’s request.
