A section of I-85 could be closed for several days following a tractor-trailer crash that killed two people.
South Carolina Department of Transportation officials say the northbound lanes of Interstate 85 near the South Carolina-North Carolina state line may be closed for several days to make repairs. Traffic is being detoured at Exit 92 through six miles of secondary roads.
The Highway Patrol said a tractor-trailer crashed into a bridge support column and burst into flames just after 2:30 a.m. Sunday. Officials say the driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle. He died at the scene. A second victim was later found in the burned sleeper portion of the truck. Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler is working to identify the victims.
Repairs on I-85 are expected to be completed before the Memorial Day weekend. However, repairs of the South Carolina Highway 150 overpass may take several weeks.
Damages of the bridge can be seen on the Live DOT camera.
