Upstate’s “Operation Rolling Thunder” drug sweep ends

Operation “Rolling Thunder” came to an end this morning in Spartanburg county. The annual crackdown on I-85 and I-26 found officers getting 4 kilos of cocaine and 3 kilos of marijuana, and they seized just under $216,000. During the operation they arrested 18 people on felony charges and captured two fugitives.

Sheriff Chuck Wright says fewer arrests mean that the project is working.

“I think the testament of the fact that we have lower numbers than we’ve had over the past three or four years–it sends a message that they are respecting us enough to stay away from Spartanburg, and that’s our goal,” says Sheriff Chuck Wright.

Wright said a total of 75 officers from 22 law agencies in South and North Carolina assisted the Spartanburg County Sheriffs Office.
