One of the world’s most widely known traveler’s magazines, Conde Nast Traveler magazine, has ranked Charleston as the number one tourist destination in the country. Charleston Area Visitors Bureau Executive Director Helen Hill accepted the award Monday night from South Carolina native, Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert in New York City.

She says the city was top-notch in many different areas.

“For everyone in the hospitality industry it’s an amazing success. They rate you on atmosphere and ambience, the culture and the sites, the lodging, the restaurants and the shopping–and most importantly the friendliness. So it’s everyone in Charleston that made this happen,” says Hill.

For the past 16 years, Charleston has ranked in the top 10. Last year, San Francisco took the number one spot.
