The former mayor and police chief of a Spartanburg County town have been arrested for misconduct in office.
Former Wellford mayor Sallie Sims Peake and former police chief James Christopher Guy were arrested Tuesday and charged with misconduct in office after the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) investigated the town’s finances earlier this year.
SLED says Peake, who was defeated in a special election in June, misused town funds to pay for the renovation of a building that was not owned by the town. The arrest warrant also says Peake hired undocumented workers to complete the job.
Police say Guy, who resigned as police chief in August, unlawfully used his authority to set aside town funds to operate a business for personal gain. SLED did not give any further details in either case.
Both are free on a $10,000 bond.
