Tax service owner charged with filing fraudulent returns

Authorities say the owner of a tax service business in Moncks Corner was arrested Wednesday after investigators said they discovered she had filed fraudulent tax returns in her clients’ names.

Tammy Brinsonwas arrested on nine counts of willfully assisting in the preparation of false or fraudulent tax returns. According to the SC Department of Revenue (DOR), Brinson met with clients between 2007 and 2008 and filed income tax returns in their names and unbeknownst to them.

Revenue officials say each of the Tammy’s Tax Service clients was unaware that Brinson had submitted wrongful information, resulting in fraudulent refunds for the clients.

A DOR spokeswoman said investigators are still trying to determine a motive for Brinson’s actions.

If convicted of the charges, she could face up to 45 years in prison and/or $4,500 in fines.
