Woman accidentally shot during gun safety class

Spartanburg County authorities are investigating what is being called an accidental shooting Saturday afternoon during a concealed weapons permit (CWP) class that sent one person to the hospital.

During a live-fire portion of the class, a student was being shown the proper way to hold her pistol. Spartanburg deputies say that’s when the gun fired, striking the student standing next to her in the line. Crystal Smith was taken to a nearby hospital and is listed in stable condition.

The class was being taught by off-duty Spartanburg County Deputy Calvin Smith (no relation to the victim). Smith is certified to teach the classes, according to the State Law Enforcement Division.

Investigators say the safety on the student’s weapon was not on prior to the instructor helping her with the proper grip. Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said the instructor was not aware a round was in the chamber while he was helping. During a press conference Saturday, Wright said Deputy Smith should have first checked the pistol.
