Former Darlington County magistrate faces DUI charges

A former Darlington County judge was arrested last week and now faces DUI charges. Court records show that South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers arrested Glenn Mondrae “Monty” Bell after saying he left the scene of an accident early Friday morning. Officers say Bell was driving under the influence at the time.

The 31-year-old Bell was one of the state’s youngest magistrates when he was first sworn in back in 2008. He had graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law only a year before he was nominated to the bench by State Sen. Gerald Malloy (D-Darlington).

A Darlington court official said Bell had resigned from his magistrate position six months ago so he could open his own private law practice.

There was no other information immediately available about the Friday night wreck. However, Bell’s birthday is listed as March 29– the night before his arrest.

Records show Bell was released on bond.
