SC legislature facing important deadline

State lawmakers face a critical deadline to advance legislation this week.

Bills that don’t advance from the House or Senate by April 30, can’t even be discussed in the other chamber without a two-thirds vote.

The Associated Press reports that’s a near impossible hurdle for any bill that may be at all controversial.

Since this is the second year of the Legislature’s two-year session, bills that aren’t approved before June must be reintroduced next year and start over in the legislative process.

House Speaker Bobby Harrell warned House members they may work long hours this week.

The House is currently working on bills that would eliminate some sales tax exemptions and reduce income taxes for residents and small businesses.
