A York County man is listed in critical condition after he reportedly jumped from a ledge inside the Moss Justice Center Monday.
Authorities say 49-year-old Steven Spagnoli jumped from an upper tier stair rail just after 4 p.m. Monday, falling 12 feet onto his head. Sheriff’s Office spokesman Maj. Robbie Hudgins says Spagnoli was out of his cell for his allotted recreation period when the incident occurred. He was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center.
Spagnoli was sentenced to life in prison for murder on Friday. Prosecutors accused him of killing a drug dealer seeking to collect money Spagnoli owed him in September 2010. Spagnoli was scheduled to be transferred to the custody of the South Carolina Department of Corrections on Tuesday.
Hudgins says that Spagnoli was the only inmate out of his cell in the housing area at the time.
